Aid Workers Attacked in Congo and Darfur

A 27 year old Congolese agricultural engineer working for Caritas France was shot dead and robbed by two men in army uniforms in the Democratic Republic of Congo.  A British man working for Medair was shot in the leg during an attempted raid in Darfur.  He is expected to make a full recovery.

UN Reports Shortfall in Humanitarian Aid

The UN has a record $4.8 billion dollar gap in funding for humanitarian aid for 2009.  The UN sought to raise $9.5 billion this year, but has so far received less than half that amount.  Additionally, the recession and increased conflict in countries such as Pakistan has increased the demand for aid.

House Cuts $90 Million from Obama’s National Service Budget

The House Appropriations Committee voted to decrease the proposed funding for the Corporation for National Community Service from $1.15 billion to $1.06 billion for 2010.  The agency, which operates AmeriCorps and other service organizations, is still to receive a $169 million increase over its 2009 budget.
