US Restricts Aid to Somalia

US aid groups are upset that Treasury Department sanctions in Somalia are hindering efforts to bring life saving aid to Somalia as a catastrophic drought puts 3.63 million Somalis in need of aid.  Treasury Department sanctions prohibit any nonprofit from dealing with al-Shabab or any other “terrorist” organization, which runs counter to the idea that humanitarian aid should be delivered on a politically neutral basis.  Humanitarian agencies say that the rules are too strict to allow them to operate legally in the country.
