(The Los Angeles Times) The Obamas’ tax returns have been released from the White House.  Due in large part to his two bestselling books, The Audacity of Hope and Dreams From My Father, President Obama’s income his first year in office totaled $5.5 million.  He paid almost $1.8 million in federal taxes and $163,000 in Illinois state taxes.  Perhaps more interesting, however, is the amount of charitable donations the Obama family has made.  In 2009, they donated $329,100 to 40 different charities; the most substantial donation of $100,000 went to United Negro College Fund and CARE.  President Obama also donated his whole Nobel Peace Prize–$1.4 million—to 10 different charities.
